The Best Orangutan Tour

Upon arriving in Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan, you will be greeted by our friendly tour guide from the Orangutan Journey team. They will escort you to the quaint harbor town of Kumai, where you'll board your private Klotok boat. Onboard, you'll meet your dedicated journey team, which includes a boat captain, deckhand, and a skilled chef.

Your orangutan tour begins with a scenic two-hour cruise up the Sekonyer River, heading towards Tanjung Puting National Park. Your first stop is Tanjung Harapan Camp, where you will trek approximately 1 km through the lush rainforest to witness the 3 PM orangutan feeding. Take your time to enjoy and photograph this unique experience as your guide shares fascinating insights about the ancient Borneo rainforest.

After the feeding session concludes around 5 PM, you'll board your boat for a river safari. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife along the riverbanks, including the rare and remarkable proboscis monkeys, endemic to Borneo.

Conclude your first day with a delightful dinner on board, followed by an overnight stay on your comfortable Klotok boat.

The Beauty of Borneo - Day 1

Camp Pondok Tanggui - Day 2

Start your day with a delicious breakfast onboard as you continue your orangutan tour. Cruise up the Sekonyer River for about an hour to reach Camp Pondok Tanggui. The morning breeze, stunning forest panorama, and vibrant birdlife create a perfect start to your day.

Upon arrival at Camp Pondok Tanggui, take a light trek to the feeding platform to witness the 9 AM orangutan feeding session. Enjoy the opportunity to observe and photograph these magnificent creatures during their morning meal. Afterward, your knowledgeable tour guide will lead you on an exploration trek through the Camp Pondok Tanggui forest area.

Camp Leakey - Day 2

Board your boat again and enjoy a delicious lunch as you embark on a 1.5-hour upriver journey to the legendary Camp Leakey, the largest orangutan research center established in 1971. At Camp Leakey's dock, you may be greeted by some of the semi-wild orangutans that reside there. Camp Leakey hosts a significant population of orangutans who live there permanently.

Your guide will share fascinating stories about the individual orangutans you encounter and provide insights into their social interactions. Be sure to keep your camera ready to capture every memorable moment.

Next, trek approximately 1.5 km to the feeding platform for the 2 PM orangutan feeding session at Camp Leakey. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the diverse flora and fauna of the Borneo tropical rainforest, one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Witness orangutans in their natural habitat and marvel at the rich biodiversity of the area.

After the feeding activity, return to your boat with a forest walk and enjoy a relaxing cruise back down the river. During this river safari, watch for various primates, wild animals, birds, and the endemic proboscis monkeys along the riverbanks.

This concludes your second day of the orangutan tour. In the evening, unwind with dinner on board, followed by a restful night at Rimba Lodge, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the jungle.

People and Culture

Day three of your Borneo adventure is a journey into local culture. Learn traditional Dayak dances in Pasir Panjang village's iconic longhouse, guided by local experts. Afterward, glide along the Arut River on a traditional "Getek" canoe, observing daily life and enjoying the sunset. End your day with a delightful dinner at a local restaurant, savoring authentic Bornean cuisine and reflecting on your cultural discoveries. It's a day filled with enriching experiences, connecting you deeply with Borneo's people and their vibrant traditions.

People and Culture - Day 3

Start your final day of the orangutan tour with a delightful breakfast at the Ecolodge. Afterward, you will be taken onboard to participate in an endemic tree planting program, contributing to the preservation of the Borneo rainforest.

Once the tree planting program is complete, return to your boat and enjoy a tranquil two-hour sail back to Kumai harbor. Savor a delicious lunch served onboard as you take in the serene surroundings.

Upon arrival at Kumai harbor, you will check in to your hotel in Pangkalan Bun and have some free time to relax for about an hour.

In the afternoon, embark on a city tour beginning with a visit to "Istana Kuning," the historical Sultan Palace and an important Islamic symbol in Pangkalan Bun. This is the only Islamic Kingdom in Central Borneo.

Next, experience the unique culture of the Dayak people by learning traditional Dayak dances from local dancers and experts. This special cultural visit takes place at the iconic Dayak traditional longhouse in Pasir Panjang village.

After the dance practice, enjoy a serene sunset cruise along the Arut River in Pangkalan Bun aboard a traditional small motorized canoe, known as a "Getek." Take in the sights of local culture along the riverbanks and the beautiful sunset panorama.

Conclude your evening with dinner at a local restaurant, followed by an overnight stay at your hotel in Pangkalan Bun.
